Church Life

All believers are joined together in Christ to be one church. This church is being built to be the living temple in which God is present with his people (Ephesians 2.19-22). We participate in the life of the church in the local or gathered church. The local church can only have one foundation and that is Christ Jesus as proclaimed in the gospel. On this foundation we have the responsibility to build up the community in which God lives with his people (1Corinthians 3.10 17).

The first description of the church outlines the continual commitments of church life as follows:

"They were continually devoting themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer" (Acts 2.42).

  1. The Apostles' teaching: The first commitment must be to the apostles' teaching which alone gives to us the gospel and the teaching of Christ. The word of God must be taught. It is the food that nurtures our spiritual life (1Peter 2.2; 1Corinthians 3.2; Hebrews 5.13-14), directs us and is the basis of all we are to do.
  2. The fellowship: The apostles' teaching brings us into fellowship, a shared life in Christ (1John 1.3). In this fellowship, all who are believers are accepted and together we worship God (Romans 15.7-12; Acts 2.47). Jesus taught that the fellowship is to support Christians in their spiritual life and restore those who stray. He also taught that sin is to be repented of and forgiven (Matthew 18). In the fellowship we are to serve one another with the spiritual gifts God gives so that the church may be built up (1 Corinthians 12 to 14; Ephesians 4.1-16).
  3. The breaking of bread: The Lord's Supper is the expression of our fellowship as a communion in the body and blood of Christ (1Corinthians 10.14-17). At this supper we eat of the bread and drink of the cup in remembrance of Christ in his sacrifice for us. By this we commit ourselves to the unity of the body of Christ (1 Corinthians 11.17-34).
  4. Prayer: The church as the body of Christ receives God's power and grace to carry out God's work. Jesus taught his disciples to pray in order to receive because the Father "will give what is good to those who ask him" (Matthew 7.7-11; John 14.12-14; 16.23-24).

We have one meeting of the church on Sunday morning, and at this time we seek to carry out the full function of the church in teaching, fellowship in worship and sharing, the breaking of bread and prayer. Then we encourage and support the Christians to go and live for the Lord as disciples, be witnesses to Christ in the world and serve him as he has called them to.
